Shotokan ND Tigers
Shotokan ND Tigers is an excellent choice for kids because it teaches more than just kicks and punches—students develop confidence, discipline, focus, and respect in a safe, supportive environment. Classes are age-appropriate and structured, so children build coordination, balance, and fitness while learning clear, achievable goals. Instructors mentor each child, reinforcing positive behavior, teamwork, and perseverance through progressive lessons and measurable milestones.
In today’s fast-paced world, children need strong values to navigate challenges and make good choices. Shotokan ND Tigers emphasizes self-control, responsibility, and resilience, giving kids practical self-defense skills alongside emotional and social tools to handle stress, peer pressure, and conflict. By learning to set goals and earn rank through hard work, students leave class more grounded, respectful, and prepared for the future.
Small by Design. Personal by Tradition.
At Shotokan ND Tigers, you are more than a name on a membership list. I intentionally keep my dojo small so I can give each student the personal attention they deserve.
Whether you train with me online or at my local dojo, I believe in getting to know you as a student and helping you grow throughout your martial arts journey.
Have a question? Need help with a technique, kata, or your training? You can contact me directly by phone, text, or video, and I will respond as soon as possible.
Karate is more than learning techniques and earning belts. It is a journey of discipline, confidence, character, and personal growth. As your Sensei, I want to be there to guide you along that journey.
Shotokan ND Tigers
You're never just another student.

My name is John E. Risinger, and above all else, I consider myself a lifelong student of the martial arts. While I have the privilege of serving as a Sensei, I believe that true martial artists never stop learning. My journey began in 1978 at a gym on Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, where I started training in Shotokan Karate. I studied this art until I turned 18 and left to serve in the United States Navy.
During those years, the internet was nothing like it is today. Finding instruction wasn't as simple as watching a video or joining an online class. If I wanted to continue learning, I had to seek out different instructors and styles wherever I was stationed. Along the way, I trained in Tracey's Kenpo and Jujitsu, and I even had the opportunity to compete in a Vale Tudo (full contact) match. Every experience added to my understanding of martial arts and helped shape the martial artist I would become.
Martial arts isn't just about punches, kicks, or kata. It's about how you respond when life tests you. We all face obstacles, setbacks, and moments when quitting seems easier than continuing. At every crossroads, you have a choice: give up or keep moving forward. I chose to persevere. Those challenges taught me lessons that no dojo alone could provide—resilience, patience, humility, and determination.
Years later, I discovered Shotokan University Online. I'll admit, I was skeptical. I've always believed in the traditional brick-and-mortar dojo experience, and I questioned how online training could possibly compare. But I decided to give it a chance.
Sensei Justin quickly changed my perspective. Through detailed instruction, personalized feedback, and a structured curriculum, I realized that meaningful martial arts training isn't limited by physical location. Success still depends on the same thing it always has—consistent practice, discipline, and the willingness to learn.
If you're considering training with Shotokan ND Tigers, I encourage you to take that first step. Trust the process, remain consistent, and never stop learning. Progress doesn't happen overnight—it is earned through discipline, perseverance, and countless small improvements over time. If you're willing to put in the work, this program will give you the tools to become not only a better martial artist, but a stronger, more confident version of yourself.

The time it takes to earn a black belt in our program depends on you, the student. It all comes down to how committed you are to regular training, how much and how long you practice each time, and how motivated you are to go all the way. Regular training reaps rewards! Some students progress so quickly that they achieve their black belts in about a year, however most students who achieve black belt ranking do it in an average of 3 years.
Yes! Our online course is designed to enable you to train and earn rank mostly on your own. Even so, when you train in our course you'll benefit from having a training partner to help you practice sparring techniques. So, even though you can train on your own most of the time we recommend that you ask a friend or family member to assist you in some of your training to get more "hands on" practice and to work with you in your test videos. Ideally, you should have a committed training partner who can meet with you regularly. But we understand that this is not always possible.
Before you can take a test to earn rank in this course, you must train by following along to all of the video lessons and classes in the course-level you're testing for. Once you have completed the lessons and classes for your level along with all of the assignments, you are allowed to submit your test. (There is a waiting period of 4 weeks between passing a test and being able to submit your next test).
To submit a test:
Within a week of receiving your test, I will send you an email letting your know if either you passed or if you need some correction. I will also record a personalized feedback video for you. In this video I will provide suggestions to further improve your technique.
When you pass a test, you'll be sent a personalized certificate of rank for that level.
If you do not pass a test the first time, I will give you corrections and ask you to take the test or parts of it again. You'll be able to resubmit your test, or parts of the test, as many times as needed without paying another fee.
When you pass a course rank test, you will graduate to the next rank level. When you graduate to a rank, other than black belt, you will receive (via email) a downloadable and printable, official, personalized rank-completion certificate issued by Shotokan University Online and internationally accredited by both the Funokoshi Shotokan Karate Association (FSKA) and Shotokan Karate-Do International Association (SKDIA).
Yes, you can. You're not bound by any contracts or annoying cancellation processes. If you just don’t like the course, you can cancel. Or if you fall on hard times and want to pause your membership for a while we can do that for you, too.
You do not need a gi to train or submit your exams. We do prefer that you have the correct belt for your level when submitting an assignment or exam. Belts must be purchased on your own. A link is provided below to uniforms and accessories.
